The 25-year-old woman, a resident of southern Vietnam, has been living and working at the Phu An Hotel in Hai Chau District since April 30.
A contact tracing process revealed that she had come into close contact with a man who also works at the hotel and was confirmed as a Covid-19 patient Tuesday morning. The source of his transmission is yet to be identified. He developed symptoms of fever and fatigue on May 2 and visited the Hoan My Da Nang Hospital in Thanh Khe District for a health check. The hospital took his samples for testing and he was confirmed positive the next day.
With the latest case, Vietnam has confirmed 37 local community transmissions of the novel coronavirus since April 29, when a period of more than a month without community transmissions was broken.
Thirty-five of the cases are linked to hotspots in the northern provinces of Vinh Phuc and Ha Nam. The sources of transmission have all been people found with Covid-19 after they had already completed the mandatory 14-day quarantine and tested negative two or three times. These include a group of Chinese experts who have already returned to their country.
Of the total of 2,996 Covid-19 cases confirmed in Vietnam so far, 1,608 are community transmissions.
