A woman in the central Quang Nam Province has been accused of murdering her child to fraudulently claim insurance money two years ago.

The Quang Nam Province police took in To Thi Ty Na, 44, on April 5.

They said Na's crime was uncovered after Major General Nguyen Huu Hop, director of the provincial police, ordered a review of unsolved cases whose investigations were suspended due to lack of evidence.

Authorities thus reopened the case of a suspicious death that occurred on Jan. 2, 2023.

At around 10:05 p.m. that day, at Na's house in Ha Lam Town, Thang Binh District, her biological son, Nguyen Van Hoang, was found dead in the bathroom.

Two days before her arrest Na had been told to participate in a crime scene reenactment. Based on their investigation, the police concluded that Na killed the boy with the intention of claiming insurance money.

The modus operandi and the insurance amount involved have not been disclosed.
