Seven men, including suspected members of Japan’s organized crime groups, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly robbing cash worth about 420 million yen (US$2.6 million) in Tokyo’s Ueno District earlier this year.

Among those detained is Jinryu Kano, 21, an executive member of a faction within the Yamaguchi-gumi, one of Japan’s largest criminal organizations, Kyodo News reported.

Police said Kano and six others are suspected of conspiring with additional accomplices to carry out the robbery, targeting victims that included a Chinese man in his 40s, Japan Today reported.

Investigators said the suspects allegedly stole three suitcases containing the cash and pepper-sprayed the victim before fleeing the scene on the night of Jan. 29.

Authorities are also examining whether the case is linked to similar incidents reported shortly afterward at Ueno’s nearby transport hubs and at Haneda Airport, as well as in Hong Kong, Japanese news site NHK reported.

Police said that just hours after the Ueno robbery, another group of four men carrying about 190 million yen was attacked by four assailants at Haneda Airport.

Although the victims were assaulted, no money was taken in that incident.

Japan was named Asia's safest country in 2026 by travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection thanks to its strict laws and low street crimes.
