A court in Da Lat Town in Vietnam's Central Highlands on Wednesday sentenced Vuong Nhat Thao Vy, 28, to two years, and Huynh Thi Thanh Hang, 27, to 1.5 years in prison for "torturing others."
It also ordered the two women to compensate the family of the girl who they had tortured at least VND150 million (US$6,334).
According to the verdict, the mother of the two-year-old girl had to work far from home, so last summer, she left her baby to a local kindergarten staff, who, while busy with some private affairs, left the girl at Vy and Hang's personal residencies for VND2 million ($86) a month.
On July 4 last year, when the girl did not behave, Vy took her to a restroom and made the girl stand on the toilet cover. Ten minutes later, the girl fell and hit her head on the restroom floor.
Four days later, when the girl did not listen to what she said, Vy pushed her to the ground face first.
Days after that, every time the girl failed to follow their orders, Vy and Hang would make her face the wall and at the same time, raise both hands for 10-20 minutes. If the girl cried, she would be slapped in the face.
On July 16, as the girl’s body turned cold and purple, they took her to the hospital.
Doctors said the girl suffered brain injuries, because of which her body is only operating at 64%.
