Construction of a 12-km road at a cost of VND1.2 trillion (US$51.1 million) through a national park in Thanh Hoa Province began Sunday.

The Van Thien Road, with four lanes and a designed speed at 80 kph, will run through Nong Cong and Nhu Thanh districts in the central province.

Construction is expected to finish in 2025.

The Ben En National Park in Nhu Xuan and Nhu Thanh districts has a natural area of 15,000 ha and a rich ecosystem.

It is a prime site for scientific research and eco-tourism, being a major attraction for both Vietnamese and foreign tourists.

Do Minh Tuan, chairman of Thanh Hoa Province, said the site's tourism potential has not been fully exploited.

Transport to the park used to be mainly by National Highway 45 and provincial road 520.

The Van Thien Road aims to fully exploit the park's potential, helping develop tourism, and improve the traffic network in the area, Tuan added.
