According to the Vietnam Food Administration under the Ministry of Health, the following groups should avoid pineapples:
Individuals with allergy
Pineapples contain bromelain, which can break down proteins and is used to treat various conditions. However, it can also cause allergic reactions. Symptoms such as intermittent abdominal cramps, nausea, hives, itching, lip numbness, and in severe cases, suffocation, can occur about 15 minutes after consumption, especially in those with a history of allergies like hives, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, or asthma.
People with diabetes
Diabetics are advised against consuming pineapples due to their high sugar content, which can contribute to weight gain and obesity. Those with diabetes should consult their doctor before including pineapples in their diet.
High blood pressure patients
Individuals with high blood pressure should limit pineapple intake, as excessive consumption can lead to symptoms like facial flushing, headaches, and dizziness, increasing the risk of a hypertensive crisis.

Individuals with dental issues
Those having inflamed gums or mouth ulcers should also limit their pineapple intake as the glucosides in pineapples can severely irritate the mouth and esophagus. Overconsumption of the fruit may cause numbness in the tongue and throat, so even healthy people are advised to limit their intake.
People with stomach issues
Those with stomach conditions such as gastritis or ulcers should consume only small amounts of pineapple. The fruit’s organic acids and enzymes can exacerbate stomach and intestinal inflammation, causing nausea and discomfort.
Those prone to overheating
Individuals who tend to experience hyperthermia should avoid pineapples, as they may experience symptoms like fatigue, discomfort, intense itching, and a sudden heat flush accompanied by a skin rash about 30 minutes to an hour after eating.
People who have previously experienced such reactions should exercise caution and start with small amounts to test for any adverse effects. Additionally, it’s crucial to remove the eyes of the pineapple before eating, as they may lead to bloating, indigestion, and constipation.
Excessive consumption of pineapples may also result in diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, and heartburn due to high vitamin C levels. The fruit’s acidic nature can also promote tooth decay if consumed in large amounts.
Some individuals may experience a burning or discomfort in their mouth, lips, or tongue after consuming pineapple or its juice, attributed to the bromelain enzyme. This enzyme is especially concentrated in the fruit’s core and peel. Typically, this sensation subsides on its own after a few hours.
