Cleaner works 27 years in Malaysia without day off, raising children to become judge, doctor, engineer

Abu Bakar, 70, left Bangladesh for Malaysia 31 years ago in search of job opportunities to support his family financially. At that time, his youngest son was only six months old. In an interview with Humans of Kuala Lumpur, as reported by SCMP, Bakar shared that he took on tasks others avoided and worked tirelessly every day of the week.

"I haven’t returned to Bangladesh since I came here. I miss my family, and they miss me too, but everything I’ve done has been for my children’s better future," Bakar said.

His daily routine remained consistent for decades. "Each day, I wake up, shower, have breakfast, go to work, return home, call my family in the village, and then rest."

While his exact salary was not disclosed, the average monthly wage for a cleaner in Malaysia is around 1,640 ringgit (US$400), according to employment website Indeed. Meanwhile, the cost of living for a family of four in Bangladesh is about US$1,200 per month, excluding rent, Numbeo reported.

It is unclear if Bakar's family had other sources of income, but most of his earnings were sent home to cover his children's education and living costs.

His dedication bore fruit, as his daughter became a judge, and his two sons pursued careers as a doctor and an engineer.

"I’m truly grateful for what my children have achieved," Bakar expressed.

After years of hard work, Bakar has now returned to Bangladesh to be with his family. His story has gained widespread admiration on social media, with many applauding his sacrifice and commitment.

"What an incredible role model! His unwavering faith and love for his family have kept him going all these years," one user commented.

However, not all feedback was positive. One netizen remarked, "If I were a judge, doctor, or engineer, I would have brought my father home long ago. No parent should have to suffer for their children’s success."
