A Terracotta Tiled Roof House in central Quang Ngai Province has won the Dezeen Awards 2020 architecture project of the year, along with being named rural house of the year. Located on an 80-sq-meter plot, the house was a gift to a 50-year-old couple from their children. According to architecture studio TAA Design, they wanted to design a new type of rural dwelling that creates a closed cycle of growth, harvest and consumption. Photo by TAA Design. |

The special feature of the house is its stepped roof section allowing homeowners to grow vegetables. Sally Mackereth, founder of London-based Studio Mackereth, told Dezeen this project "embodies the spirit of design in 2020. Perhaps it’s no wonder, given the situation we find ourselves in, that we were seduced by a project with nature at its heart." Photo by TAA Design. |

Another house, located in central Da Nang City, was named urban house of the year. The 250-sq-meter home belongs to a four-member family, yearning to fill their living space with greenery. Photo by Hiroyuki Oki. |

The idea was to create a garden for the house by dividing the land into two parts: one for the garden with a wall alongside, the other for the living space with its windows and doors facing out. Photo by Hiroyuki Oki. |

With this coexistence between the two parts, the project is a successful attempt to integrate nature and renewable resources, while providing engaging communal spaces that connect back to nature, Dezeen commented. Photo by Hiroyuki Oki. |

The house comprises four main "boxes", one big "box" under the roof and three smaller ones beneath. The smaller "boxes" are covered by white brick, creating a light and cozy living space. |
