Viet Duc High School in Hanoi was abuzz Monday morning as 12th graders returned after a seven-month gap.

At 6:30 a.m., the 12th graders were the first group of students to return to Viet Duc High School.
According to the original plan, all high school students from Covid low- and medium-risk areas were to return to school on Dec. 6, but a sudden resurgence caused authorities to change their mind, and they have allowed only 12th grade students to go back to class.
Besides, classes are staggered, with half the students attending on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the rest on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The school has put up a board for students to share their feelings on their return.
The most common were anxious and eager followed by happiness, sadness and surprise.

The school has arranged automatic temperature screening and disinfection machines for students at the front gate.

The class president recorded the temperature of each student in the class before entering classroom.

Students saluted the flag at the beginning of the week right in their classroom.

Khanh Van, who teaches class 12A5, said, "I am very happy and excited to see students in class again".

Ngoc Anh, a student in the same class, said: "I'm glad to meet my friends again and scared of the virus at the same time. But happiness predominates because I can resume my studies".

Each class is divided into two rooms to ensure social distancing and each desk has only one student.
Besides, 36,000 ninth graders in 18 suburban districts also returned to school the same day.
Students in all other grades will continue to learn online. Preschool children will also stay at home.

Nguyen Van Hai, head teacher of class 12A6, a selfie along with his students to record the resumption of classes. Since Nov. 23, Hanoi has organized vaccination against Covid for children aged 15-17, mostly high school students. Until now, first dose coverage has crossed 90 percent. As of Monday morning, Hanoi has recorded over 13,000 Covid cases in the ongoing outbreak that started in late April.
