Citing reports from Hong Kong media, The Star reported that Li has kept a low profile and often downplays his identity, humorously claiming he only "resembles Li Mao Shan."
Li, now 65, was once a household name across Asia, having won the prestigious Golden Melody Award in 1991 and the Golden Bell Award in 1993.
However, according to Dimsum Daily, his career came to an abrupt halt in 1999 when his gambling addiction led to debts of NT$200-$300 million (US$6.2-$9.3 million), a financial burden that ultimately prompted him to leave Taiwan with his family. He is said to have initially settled in Malaysia before later moving to Singapore.
Li reportedly paid off his debts over the years and made a return to the spotlight by holding a solo concert at the Arena of Stars in Malaysia in June 2019. Despite this, sources indicate that Li continues to avoid returning to Taiwan, wary of encountering creditors from his past.
