According to The Manila Times, Carlos expressed his excitement at the 2024 Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night about competing with his brother in the Olympics: "Both [of] us representing the Philippines will be exciting but at the same time, it will be a challenge for both of us."
"It’s not an easy process to enter the Olympics, but I’m praying that both of us will qualify and make the podium, too," he added.
Eldrew reinforced his older brother’s thoughts, underscoring his dedication to their common Olympic goal.
"It is an amazing dream, but I am determined to make it a reality. Everything is possible," he declared.
Their aspirations come amidst ongoing familial tensions. Carlos accused his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, of financial mismanagement in a TikTok video posted on Aug. 6, 2024. He claimed she also mishandled his earnings, misled him about gymnastics incentives, and unjustly accused his girlfriend, content creator Chloe San Jose, of financial wrongdoing.
The following day, Angelica responded with a press conference, expressing regret and explaining her actions.
"The money was given to me," she stated, as reported by The New York Post. "As a mother, I was worried that my child might face financial problems in the future. So I invested it under my name."
Despite a reconciliation incentive from former Filipino politician and businessman Chavit Singson—who offered Carlos and his family 5 million Philippine pesos (US$85,052) if they reconcile—the family conflict remains unresolved.
On the sports front, 17-year-old Eldrew is the current junior Asian champion in vault and won a silver medal in the same event in 2023.
Meanwhile, Carlos, 25, made history as the first Filipino athlete to win two gold medals at a single Olympics, in the floor exercise and vault events at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
