Vietnamese Myra Tran is one of 40 contestants to qualify for the Showcase Round & Final Judgment at this year’s American Idol.

The high school student, real name Tran Minh Nhu, on Sunday earned a big round of applause with her solo-performance of Sia’s song Chandelier in the Hollywood Weeks round. She then performed Kelly Clarkson’s hit Stronger with teammates Juan Pablo, Jade Flores and Moriah Fromica.

In both performances she showcased her strong vocal ability by hitting high notes and making vocal runs. In the Showcase Round, she will get a chance to move into the top 20.

In her audition round, the 19-year-old blew the judges away with her performance of Jennifer Hudson's One Night Only. The video of her audition has garnered 15 million views and great praise from fans around the world on the program’s official Facebook page.

Nhu is familiar to Vietnamese audiences as the winner of the 2016 X Factor Vietnam, a music talent show. She moved to the U.S. in 2017 and is currently studying in a high school in Washington State.

American Idol is a music talent show created by Simon Fuller in the U.S. in 2002. The first 15 seasons were broadcast on Fox channel, while the last two were on ABC.

It is one of the most successful talent shows in American television history, and has helped discover singers like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, and Jordin Sparks.

Luke Bryan, one of the judges this year, said Myra Tran has the potential to become another Kelly Clarkson.
