Students at Australian International School (AIS) in Ho Chi Minh City celebrated the school’s best-ever International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma exam results on July 6.

Graduates from Australian International School (AIS) achieved a 100 percent pass rate for their IB Diploma, the first time in the school’s history. The global average is around 79 percent.

A total 89 AIS students, the largest graduating cohort in the school’s history, studied for the IB exams. Besides an incredible 100 percent pass rate, the students’ average points total was 34.4, the second-highest in AIS history, well above the world average.

Many AIS students are now heading for the world’s leading universities. These include Hoang Kim Thu Do and Keun Woo Park, who both scored 44 out of 45 points, putting them in the top 1 percent of IB students worldwide.

Thu, who has been offered places at a string of stellar universities, including University College London, King's College London, Monash University, the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales, is one of AIS’s Prefects in 2020-2021, and was heavily involved in arranging a Model United Nations (MUN) conference at AIS and many other school activities.

Thu said: "AIS teachers have been extremely considerate when providing me with guidance while still allowing me to explore different areas of interest, which undoubtedly alleviates my apprehension and encourages me to explore beyond the scope of the syllabus."

Keun Woo now has the option of attending VinUniversity in Hanoi on a full scholarship or one of several leading universities in South Korea. He will study either electrical engineering or computer science.

He said AIS was an ideal place to study for his IB Diploma: "The friendly and cheerful environment at AIS has always motivated me to keep studying."

In addition, an amazing 13 percent of students were awarded 40 points or more, also far above the global average.

The IB Diploma is the world’s leading pre-university course for 16-18 year olds. It offers a challenging academic program but also aims to improve personal development and leadership skills – qualities that universities look for.

Mark Beales, IB Diploma coordinator, said: "These are another set of fantastic results. I am delighted that our students can now head off to their dream universities. Our experienced and dedicated teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure these students achieve their full potential. In addition, the students showed great resilience when studying online during various lockdowns to complete their work. They fully deserve these excellent results."
