Vietnam should rethink its focus on English-only education, amid growing trade with Asia

What foreign language should students learn today? Should English be the only mandatory option in schools? The answer depends on personal interests, environment, and career goals, especially at the university level.

A foreign language is a tool, and its value is determined by a person's objectives. When students are unsure about their future, guidance from parents, teachers, or experienced professionals can be helpful. However, in today's society, education is often viewed more as a path to better job opportunities than as a means to explore cultures or expand knowledge.

Language is a social construct, and its relevance depends on where it is used. In regions with significant investment from South Korea, Japan, or China, requiring students to learn a language with little local relevance can be a waste of time and resources. A one-size-fits-all approach to language education simply does not work.

This is especially clear to those who have worked in Vietnam's industrial zones. The education system needs to be more flexible, allowing students to choose languages that align with their career aspirations. Giving them that freedom would be a significant improvement.

Foreign language skills are undeniably valuable, particularly those widely used in international organizations like the United Nations. The goal is not to prioritize one language over another but to recognize language as a tool for gaining knowledge, expanding trade, and fostering cultural exchange. Each language plays a role in connecting Vietnam to different parts of the world.

Choosing the right foreign language can open new doors. It can lead to scholarships, better job opportunities, and long-term career growth. This decision can shape your future—choose wisely.
