A Vietnamese player punched the referee in the face during a domestic football league match at the Nha Trang Stadium Wednesday after the latter gave him a red card.

Ngo Anh Vu, defender for Binh Thuan FC, hit referee Tran Ngoc Nho during the club's match against Vinh Phuc FC in League Two, the third tier professional association football league in Vietnam organized by the Vietnam Football Federation.

Vu, 33, committed what was considered a dangerous tackle in the 32nd minute of a play-off match that would decide promotion to the second tier league. He received a yellow card, which was his second in the game. Livid at being removed from the game, he chased after the referee and hit him. As his teammates restrained him, he continued verbally abusing the referee. Vu also gestured to the crowd as some police officers escorted him out.

Ngo Anh Vu, defender for Binh Thuan FC, hit referee Tran Ngoc Nho, June 8, 2022.

Duong Van Hien, head of the VFF Referee Committee, who was in the stadium during the game, said: "The second yellow card given by Nho was accurate."

"The player played very dangerously. He had received a yellow card for another foul but continued to play that way. He deserved the indirect red card."

Hien said Vu will be duly punished by the VFF for his actions.

Vinh Phuc was leading 2-0 before the incident. But Binh Thuan managed to equalize and win the match in a penalty shootout, gaining promotion to the second tier football league.
