Due to a Covid player shortage, Myanmar have withdrawn from 2022 AFF U23 Youth Championship.

Myanmar sent their request to ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) on Tuesday, only four hours before playing Malaysia.

During a daily Covid-19 test in Cambodia, many infections were detected in the Myanmar camp, with several players quarantined and one game canceled.

According to Myanmar coach Velizar Popov, there are only five healthy players left.

"It is with great regret that the Myanmar U23 team has to withdraw from AFF U23 Championship. We understand that the team has been raring to kick off their campaign and fans have been eager to catch the team in action. However, the health and safety of everyone involved are of utmost importance and we fully understand the decision that has been taken. We wish the affected members a full and speedy recovery."

Before Myanmar, Indonesia also withdrew from the tournament due to Covid-19. Therefore, only Laos and Malaysia remain in group B.

2022 AFF U23 Youth Championship will take place from Feb. 14 to 26. Indonesia are the defending champions, having won the title in 2019.

Vietnam are in group C and will play their first game against Singapore on the 19th, then Thailand on the 22nd.
