Striker Pham Tuan Hai will be sidelined for a month due to injuries, forcing him to miss the two matches against Indonesia in the 2026 World Cup second qualifiers this month.

Hai was on the receiving end of a brutal kick to his right shin by defender Nguyen Tang Tien in the fourth minute of added time in the second half of Hanoi FC’s 3-1 home victory over Quang Nam in a V-League match on Friday.

The striker had to be carried off the pitch in a stretcher before being taken by an ambulance to the nearby Xanh Pon hospital for examination.

The initial X-ray results showed no bone injuries for Hai. However, a comprehensive examination on Saturday morning concluded that the Hanoi FC striker had issues with the ankle joint of his right leg, with injuries to the Achilles tendon and the front and rear ligaments.

The injuries mean Hai will be out of action for at least a month before he can resume training and playing.

In the meantime, he will not be featuring for Hanoi FC in their match against Ha Tinh in the National Cup round of 16 on March 12. He is also certain to miss the Vietnam national team's two matches against Indonesia on March 21 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and on March 26 at My Dinh Stadium in the 2026 World Cup second qualifiers.

When the V-League resumes after the national team break, Tuan Hai will be out for matchweeks 14, 15, and 16. The league will then take another break to allow for the Vietnam U23's preparations for the 2024 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar.

Losing Hai is a significant blow for Hanoi FC and the national team, as he has always been the first attacking choice for both.

Since the beginning of the 2023-2024 season, the born striker has played 18 matches for Hanoi FC in the V-League and AFC Champions League, scoring eight goals.

In the national team, the 1998-born striker played two matches in the second round of World Cup qualifiers and two matches in the 2023 Asian Cup, scoring one goal against Japan.

Prior to Hai's injury, Coach Philippe Troussier had already lost defender Doan Van Hau due to an unrecovered Achilles tendon injury. Defender Que Ngoc Hai’s and midfielder Nguyen Tuan Anh’s fitness is also in doubt, while midfielder Do Hung Dung has just returned to training and yet to be in the best condition.
