Lionel Messi has been called a "savage" on social media after he chipped the ball over an injured opponent to get a shot on goal.

In the MLS game between Inter Miami and Real Salt Lake on Thursday, after dribbling at the edge of the box, Messi lifted the ball over a player who was rolling on the ground in pain. The Inter Miami captain was then able to pull a finish, but it was blocked by Salt Lake defense.

This play caught the attention of fans and media, with some calling it savage and somewhat disrespectful.

"Messi is a menace for this one," a fan wrote on social media.

"Just seen the most disrespectful football clip out," another fan commented.

Inter Miami won 2-0 overall, with Messi providing an assist.

The Argentinan star is known as a composed player and rarely gets into trouble during a game. However, since the 2022 World Cup, he became fiercer and showed more leadership on the pitch.

Messi is now in his first full season with Miami. After joining the club from PSG in July last year, he made an immediate impact by winning the Leagues Cup.

He has now scored 11 goals and had five assists in 14 games for Miami.
