The 2022 AFF Cup is Honda's third tournament with the Cambodian national team. Before the tournament, he criticized the organizers for arranging Cambodia's tight schedule, saying that playing a game every three days is not reasonable.
When Honda was still a player, he represented Japan in three World Cups, from 2010 to 2018 and he was a member of the team that won the Asian Cup in 2011.
