Many Ho Chi Minh City restaurants have bought giant fish weighing up to 100 kilograms to attract customers on International Women’s Day, March 8.

A sushi restaurant chain said it has been delivered a 100-kilogram yellowfin tuna from Phu Yen Province just in time for the occasion.

It is the biggest fish the restaurant has ever bought, a spokesperson told VnExpress.

"We had to order it two months ago."

Hoang, a manager at a seafood restaurant in District 1, said on Wednesday customers would be served fish weighing up to 30 kg.

"It took us months to find fish this size. They are caught from big rivers."

Restaurant managers said large fish cost them two to four times the normal price, and they could only buy a few of them every year due to their rarity.

They charge customers around VND2 million per kilogram and VND4 million for the best parts.

They hope to attract customers this way this year since pre-orders for International Women’s Day have dropped by 10%.

They also offer discounts of up to 30% to regular customers and 20% to others.

Thanh, owner of a restaurant in Binh Thanh District, said: "Last year many schools and companies booked our services. This year they are buying them gifts or choosing other affordable options."

The prices of flowers, a traditionally popular gift, do not seem to have changed much from normal day unlike in previous years.

Roses cost VND10,000-20,000 each, and gift baskets with flowers, VND300,000-1 million.
