"Doctor Strange 2" became the top-grossing movie in Vietnam last year with a revenue of VND200 billion ($8.58 million), while only two Vietnamese films cracked the top 10.

"Em va Trinh " (Trinh and I) was the highest-grossing Vietnamese movie last year, but only placed sixth overall. The biopic of musician Trinh Cong Son earned VND97 billion in revenue, according to film data site Box Office Vietnam.

"Em and Trinh" was praised for its soundtrack and visuals, while its storyline was deemed underwhelming. The movie stirred controversy for what critics said was its inaccurate depiction of the relationship between singer Khanh Ly and Trinh Cong Son.

The production team apologized to Khanh Ly, saying that it was a romantic movie, and not a documentary. In late September, the producer also sent an apology to Japanese professor Michiko Yoshii for inappropriately depicting her private life in the movie.

" Bay Ngot Ngao" (Naked Truth) was the second highest-grossing Vietnamese movie last year, peaking at eighth on the list with VND83 billion. The movie revolves around the married life of Camy (Bao Anh) and businessman Dang Minh (Quoc Truong), taking on the theme of domestic abuse. The movie is heavily invested in visuals but was criticized for its writing.

Foreign films dominated in the top 10 at the Vietnamese box office.

The highest-grossing film in Vietnam last year was blockbuster "Doctor Strange 2" with a revenue of VND200 billion. Released in Vietnam in May, the sequel to "Doctor Strange" attracted droves of moviegoers.

The film is highly rated by most international reviewers for its entertaining nature, although some critics commented on what they said was lazy writing.

The animated movie "Minions 2" ranked 2nd with a revenue of VND199 billion.

James Cameron's highly anticipated blockbuster "Avatar 2" placed 3rd with a revenue of VND187 billion.

Despite not being released until December 15, the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster "Avatar" quickly dominated all movie theaters in Vietnam. If the current ticket sales rate is maintained, "Avatar 2" is expected to surpass "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), with a revenue of VND285 billion to become the all-time highest-grossing movie in Vietnam.

"6/45," a movie about a group of South Korean and North Korean soldiers fighting over a winning lottery ticket, ranked 4th, with a revenue of over VND181 billion. Released in theaters in September, the movie achieved an unexpected success despite a lack of stars and little promotion. After a month, the film became the highest-grossing South Korean movie of all time in Vietnam.

"Thor: Love and Thunder," the fourth sequel of Marvel's superhero movie of the same name, ranked 5th with VND119 billion in ticket sales. The movie version of the famous Thai TV series "Love Destiny" ranked seventh with VND84 billion. Superhero film "Black Adam" and the dinosaur movie "Jurassic World: Dominion" ranked 9th and 10th respectively with revenues of VND79 billion and VND74 billion.

A representative of CGV, the largest cinema system in Vietnam, said that the total revenue of Vietnamese films last year reached VND720-730 billion, accounting for 24-25% of the market share. Prior to the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2019, that number was 60-61%.
