A man in HCMC was arrested after a bank transferred him VND1.5 billion ($60,860) in error instead of VND1.5 million, and he decided to keep the money.

Nguyen Tam Duy, 41, was arrested by the police of Tan Phu District on Wednesday to be investigated for illegal impoundment of property.

Previously, Duy went to a bank in the district to put VND1.5 million in his personal account. However, bank employees mistakenly transferred VND1.5 billion.

Duy discovered the mistake when he got home. He then transferred VND50 million to a friend and asked them to withdraw it in cash for him.

The bank later discovered the mistake and cancelled the transfer, but only managed to recover VND1.45 billion. When the bank summoned Duy to explain what happened and asked for VND50 million back, Duy refused and returned home. The bank then informed the police.
