The index closed 4.56 points higher after gaining 8.11 points on Wednesday.
Trading on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) fell by 9.93% to VND7.79 trillion ($331.49 million).
The VN-30 basket, comprising the 30 largest capped stocks, saw 17 tickers gain.
PLX of fuel distributor Petrolimex led with a 3.3% rise, followed by SSI of leading brokerage SSI Securities Corporation, up 2.5%.
VCB of state-owned lender Vietcombank went up 1.9% and ACB of Asia Commercial Bank rose 1.4%.
Eight blue chips fell.
MSN of conglomerate Masan Group lost 1.9% and VRE of retail real estate arm Vincom Retail fell 1.3%.
Foreign investors were net buyers to the tune of VND336.36 billion, mainly buying VHM of property giant Vinhomes and HPG of steelmaker Hoa Phat Group.
The HNX-Index at the Hanoi Stock Exchange, where mid and small caps list, was down 0.31% while the UPCoM-Index at the Unlisted Public Companies Market was up by 0.36%.
