The first road, 3.8 km long, will connect the airport with National Road 51. The eight-lane road will be used by vehicles during the construction period of the airport’s first phase, according to a proposal the southern province has submitted to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
The second road, 3.5 km long with four lanes, will link the airport with the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway, a key link between HCMC and Dong Nai.
Dong Nai authorities estimate they will need to acquire 136 hectares of land for the two roads.
Construction of the first phase of Long Thanh International airport is set to begin next year and be completed by 2025, when it will have one runway and one terminal with an annual capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo.
After all three phases are completed in 2050 at a total estimated cost of VND336.63 trillion, the airport will be able to handle 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo a year.
The airport is being built to pick up the overflow from the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, which has been operating well above its designed capacity.
