Malaysia will require all foreign-registered vehicles entering from Singapore by land to have a vehicle entry permit tag starting Oct. 1.

All foreign vehicle owners are encouraged to register, install and activate their tags within the next four months Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke at a press conference Tuesday as reported by The Star.

The tag uniquely identifies each vehicle and allows the Malaysian government to track foreign vehicles as they enter or leave the country. The system also aims to prevent car theft.

Vehicle owners who fail to comply face up to MYR2,000 (US$425) in fine or jail time of six months.

The four-month period would help prevent any sort of sudden rush of vehicle owners travelling between the two countries, Loke said.

He added that more than 200,000 vehicle owners have applied for the tag, but only 70,000 have activated it, according to the Straits Times.

Registrants can choose to take their cars to Malaysia to install the tag, or have it delivered to them for self-installation.
