U.S. President Donald Trump said in his first address to the congress that he will announce reciprocal tariffs on April 2, matching barriers in other countries.

"Whatever they tax us, we will tax them. If they do non-monetary tariffs to keep us out of their market, then we will do non-monetary barriers to keep them out of our market."

Trump's claim that tariffs will allow the auto industry to "boom" contradicts the trade group representing nearly all automakers, which warned on Tuesday that the new Canada and Mexico tariffs will lead to drastic price hikes and disrupt the integrated supply chain across North America that has been in place for 25 years.
