Pham Van Tam, chairman and CEO of electronics manufacturer Asanzo, is being investigated for an alleged VND15.7-billion ($617,000) tax fraud.

Tam, 44, along with a manager at the company, Pham Xuan Tinh, has been accused of faking invoices to evade tax by the HCMC police Sunday.

They found that Tam ordered Tinh to sign contracts with importers but left them out of the books.

They then used "illegal" invoices for the purchase of goods from these companies to evade VND15.7 billion in taxes.

Asanzo makes TVs, air-conditioners, lightbulbs, and other household appliances.

In 2019 HCMC tax authorities collected VND68 billion from it in unpaid taxes and fines for tax evasion.

The company was fined another VND26.3 billion for trying to conceal its wrongdoing.

Tax authorities then handed the case over to the police after seeing indications of a crime.

Tam told VnExpress at the time that Asanzo was appealing some claims made by the tax authorities and was even considering suing them.
