On Sunday, Nguyen Thanh Duc, 41, and his wife Nguyen Thi Thu Van, 35, were arrested by police in HCMC's Thu Duc City for assault.

According to the police, Thanh, from the central province of Phu Yen, was sent by her relatives to Duc's house in Tam Phu Ward to be an apprentice. Thanh and the couple had a previous conflict with details undisclosed, leading to Duc and Van locking her up and repeatedly torturing her with sticks and pliers.

Last week, while Duc and his wife were away, Thanh escaped and sought money from local residents to return to her hometown. She later returned to Thu Duc with her relatives to report the couple's actions. Thanh had multiple injuries on her neck, limbs, chest, back, and private parts, along with eight broken ribs.

The police are currently carrying out further investigations regarding the case.
