Toyota stops Yaris sales in Vietnam

A Toyota Vietnam executive confirmed the car is no longer in the company’s product lineup, and dealerships are currently selling off inventory from 2023. The company did not specify the reason for the move.

According to a sales manager at an official Toyota showroom in HCMC, Yaris sales had plummeted in recent years due to the rising trend of high-ground clearance SUVs and CUVs.

In 2020 the company had sold 1,569 Yaris cars, and from there it kept falling, reaching 134 in 2023 and just eight units in the first five months of 2024.

Earlier another B-segment hatchback, the Honda Jazz, was also discontinued in Vietnam in 2020 due to low sales.

With the withdrawal of the Yaris, only Suzuki Swift and Mazda2 are left in the B-segment hatchback market. But a new addition looms in the form of the pure electric BYD Dolphin imported from China.

The Swift is imported from Suzuki’s plant in Thailand, which the company plans to close by the end of 2025, but it has said it will continue to sell the Swift in Vietnam.

The Yaris has been distributed by Toyota Vietnam since 2011 though the model had been popular even before that through unofficial imports.
