Superdong Kien Giang, which operates regular high-speed boat and ferry services to Phu Quoc Island, reported profits of VND27 billion (US$1 million) last quarter, the highest in a year.

Its revenues were down 4% year-on-year at VND107.7 billion though higher than the preceding three quarters.

They represent two-thirds of its profit target for the year and 54% of the revenue target.

Superdong, which operates 16 high-speed boats and two ferries to Phu Quoc and other major islands, has been offering customers promotions to sustain demand.

It expects strong competition from other companies in terms of prices and quality, and plans to upgrade its fleet, hire more professional staff and make management more efficient.

Achieving growth in the coming years would still remain a challenge, it added.

Since last year the company has been complaining that price gouging by commercial establishments on Phu Quoc has caused tourism demand to plummet.

Superdong is one of the country's major boat operators, offering services also to Nam Du, Con Dao and Phu Quy Islands, all popular travel destinations.
