The proposal is part of the ministry’s draft plan on developing airports nationwide for the 2021-2030 period with vision until 2050, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said Monday.
The upgrade is expected to boost Quang Binh’s socioeconomic development, the tourism industry in particular.
The Dong Hoi airport’s apron is being expanded and a new terminal built to increase its service capacity to three million from the current 500,000 passengers per year.
At present, the airport serves five local airlines that operate three domestic routes to Hanoi, HCMC and the northern city of Hai Phong, and one international route to Thailand’s Chiang Mai.
According to the draft plan, by 2030, Vietnam will have 28 airports, including 14 international ones.
