The incident came to light on January 16, when police officers performed a welfare check on the couple’s home in Santa Clara, a city in California’s Silicon Valley, the South China Morning Post reported.
Upon entering the home, officers discovered Yu, 27, deceased on the bedroom floor with significant head injuries.
Chen was standing nearby with a blank stare on his face, and his clothes, arms, legs and hands were spattered with blood.
His right hand appeared very swollen and discolored, according to the police.
Following his arrest, Chen was promptly hospitalized.
A concerned friend of the couple initiated the welfare check after receiving no response upon visiting their residence, as reported by the Independent.
Upon arriving at the couple's house, the friend observed Chen kneeling in front of the bedroom with his hands raised, prompting him to contact the police out of apprehension for the couple's safety.
As indicated by their LinkedIn profiles, both Chen and Yu were employed as software engineers at Google.
