Construction of a runway, a taxiway and an apron is proposed to enable the airport to handle bigger aircraft like the Airbus A320 and A321.
Earlier this year the Airports Corporation of Vietnam broke ground for the VND1.46-trillion (US$61.4 million) expansion work.
It will include a 2.4 km runway, a CAT I approach system, a taxiway, an apron, and technical infrastructure.
The passenger terminal will be expanded from the current of 300,000 capacity to 500,000.
Situated in the northern mountain province of Dien Bien, 500 kilometers west of Hanoi, the airport was built in 1994.
