A CEO and his wife in HCMC have been arrested for allegedly producing tens of thousands of counterfeit perfume bottles under the brands of Chanel, Gucci and Dior, among others, collecting illicit gains of VND15 billion (US$570,200).

Nguyen Ngoc Tho, CEO of Nguyen Huong, and his wife Truong Thi Mai Hien, along with nine other individuals, were detained by HCMC police Friday for allegedly producing and trading counterfeit goods.

The police said that the couple were the masterminds behind a "substantial" fake perfume manufacturing ring.

In a recent raid of the company’s manufacturing facility in the city, the police confiscated 20,000 bottles under the labels of popular luxury brands, along with perfume equipment and tools.

The police allege that since early last year, Tho, noticing a high demand for perfume, took to the internet to research and develop formulas for counterfeit perfumes.

He and his wife acquired machinery, raw materials, and perfume bottles. They leased a facility and employed mainly family members to mix, fill, label, and package the counterfeit perfumes.

Tho marketed these products on social media, distributing large quantities to many provinces.
