Vietnamese singer receives acclaim after singing on Chinese reality talent show

Actress-singer Chi Pu received widespread acclaim after she and her ‘band’ of stars performed Vietnamese song “See Tinh” on the Chinese reality show “Sisters Who Make Waves.”

Her performance was among the most-searched and most-commented topics on Weibo. Posts and videos of it acquired over 130 million views and tens of thousands of comments.

"Tinh Tinh Tang Tang is so sweet" was among the most popular comments, referring to the song by its Chinese name.

Chi performed with Taiwanese singer Ella, Chinese actress Jenny Zhang and Chinese actress Janice Wu in the second episode of the show on Sunday.

Chi, 30, performed the Vietnamese section of "See Tinh," a song originally sung by Vietnamese singer Hoang Thuy Linh. The other singers focused on the Chinese lyrics.

The audience and other contestants gave positive feedback and the performance received 853 points, topping the nine performances in the night.

Many said they watched the performance several times over, with the song’s catchy melody proving an earworm that was hard to resist.

"See Tinh" is the second single from Hoang Thuy Linh’s fourth studio album "LINK," which was released in February 2022.

It went viral in China and has achieved over 800 million plays on Chinese music platforms. Many Chinese singers, including virtual singer Luo Xianyi, have covered the song.

Chi Pu is a renowned Vietnamese actress and pop singer. She was honored on the Forbes’ list of the Asia Pacific's 100 most influential digital stars in 2020.

In the first episode of the show, which aired on May 5, Chi’s rendition of her song "Doa Hoa Hong" (The Rose) was also well-received.

Produced by Mango TV since its premiere in 2020, "Sisters Who Make Waves" is a reality show in which female celebrities over 30 compete against each other to win a place in a seven-member girl group.

The show won Best Reality Show at the 2020 Douyin Entertainment Awards.
