Previously, Hun Sen had sent a letter expressing his "deep sorrow." "The General Secretary had strengthened the enduring brotherly friendship with Cambodia and persistently strived over the years to enhance close cooperation not only between the Cambodian People's Party and the Communist Party of Vietnam but also between our two governments and peoples," he said.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary also sent letters of condolence.
Former classmates of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at Hanoi General University, which is now Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in 1963-1967, came to pay respects.

Hundreds of people flocked to the communal house of Lai Da Village in Dong Hoi Commune of Dong Anh District in Hanoi, the hometown of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, to pay their respects. Many of them wear a white cloth band on their head, a Vietnamese traditional gesture to mourn deceased family members.

Pham Quang Thanh, 72, in Hoai Duc District, said he took a bus to travel more than 20 km to Dong Anh District to light incense for Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Thanh used to work in Regiment 269 under the Command of the Engineering Corps. He came to the funeral despite his advanced age and just returning from many days of treatment in hospital.
"I am fulfilled to be able to offer incense to the General Secretary. I often watched his speeches at many conferences. He contributed greatly to the country's collective cause, especially in the fight against corruption and negativity. His passing leaves me with immense sorrow," Thanh said.
