After beating Kuwait 3-1 in the first game of group D, another win against Malaysia in the second will help Vietnam advance to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Malaysia have to win this game after losing to Uzbekistan, the strongest team of group D in the previous match, to keep their hope of advancement alive.
Before the 2024 U23 Asian Cup, Malaysia had a more thorough preparation than Vietnam with four friendly games, before going to Qatar half a month before the tournament. Vietnam only had 12 days of training and the head coach position changed when Hoang Anh Tuan replaced Philippe Troussier.
