Japan scored from a penalty while Vietnam failed to convert any of their chances into a goal.

Vietnam's dramatic journey at AFC Asian Cup 2019 ended in the quarterfinals Thursday night with a nail-biting 0-1 loss against Japan.

The Golden Dragons went down with a brilliant fight. They caused multiple threats against the four-time champions and successfully countered many of their attacks.

VAR was introduced for the first time in the tournament and helped save Vietnam from one corner goal from Japan, as video footage showed the ball had touched the arm of a Japanese player before hitting the net.

Yet minutes later, VAR footage helped confirm a Vietnamese foul inside the box, earning Japan one goal from the penalty in the 57th minute.
