Vietnam opened the score against Oman but ended up suffering their fourth straight loss in the final round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Oman had good control from the start of the game. They were given a penalty in the 16th minute when Ho Tan Tai swung his hand into Ali Al Busaidi's face. However, Mohsin Al-Khaldi took the penalty over the bar.

Nguyen Tien Linh opened the score for Vietnam in the 39th minute with a tap-in following a tackle by Tai. The referee only recognized the goal after spending five minutes reviewing it on VAR.

Oman equalized in the first extra minute of the first half when Issam Al Shabhi volleyed it in from a freekick outside the box.

Al-Khaldi doubled the score for Oman from a corner in the 48th minute, before Salaah Al-Yahyaei made it 3-1 from the penalty spot.

Vietnam are in the final round of World Cup qualifiers for the first time in history, facing all tougher opponents. They had earlier lost to 1-3 to Saudi Arabia, 0-1 to Australia and 2-3 to China.

They will play Japan and Saudi Arabia (second leg) next month.
