Vietnam lose 1-3 to Iran in U20 Asian Cup

Vietnam lost 1-3 to Iran in the last game of group B and exited the U20 Asian Cup despite winning the two previous games.

Before the game against Iran, Vietnam were leading the group with six points after two wins. They only needed a draw to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

However, Iran needed a win to advance and they showed their determination right from the beginning. They pushed forward and created many scoring chances.

In the 36th minute, Amin Hazbavi opened the scoring for Iran with a header. In this play, only one Vietnam players took a jump and tried to clear the ball, which was clearly not enough.

Vietnam made two substitutions in the second half and it was effective as 10 minutes later, one of the subs made a key pass and the ball is delivered inside the box for captain Khuat Van Khang, who finished cleanly to level the score.

After conceding, Iran also made a few substitutions and started putting pressure on Vietnam again. In the 75th minute, Saeid Sahaarkhizan got Iran ahead with a tap-in after receving a pass in the box.

In the remaining minutes, Vietnam players didn’t have enough stamina to compete with Iran and they even conceded another goal in the 94th minute by Hosseinnezhad.

The 1-3 loss eliminated Vietnam from the tournament as in the other game of group B, Australia thrashed Qatar 9-1 to advance to the quarterfinals with Iran.
