Malaysia beat Vietnam 1-0 to claim third place in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, ending a 12-year wait for a win over their regional rivals.

Fergus Tierney scored the only goal in the 62nd minute, firing through Bui Hoang Viet Anh's legs and into the near corner with his first touch after coming on as a substitute.

Vietnam had started brightly, with Hai Long shooting wide from the edge of the box in the fourth minute and Hoang Duc seeing a long-range effort blocked. Malaysia gradually settled into the game, with Bergson forcing a save from Le Giang Patrik in the 35th minute.

Hai Long came close again in the 43rd minute when his free kick from the edge of the area was saved by Malaysia goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi. The teams went into halftime level at 0-0.

Malaysia made an attacking change at halftime, bringing on Syahmi Safari, before Tierney and Syahir Bashah entered in the 60th minute. Tierney made an immediate impact, controlling the ball with his back to Viet Anh before sending a long-range shot through the defender and past Le Giang.

Vietnam pushed for an equalizer and appeared to have a chance to level in the 73rd minute when referee Ko Hyung-jin awarded a penalty after Haiqal's sliding tackle on Le Van Do. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, the referee overturned the decision, ruling that Haiqal had won the ball.

Vietnam continued to press late in the match. Phan Tuan Tai created an opening from the left in the 88th minute, but Le Van Do's shot was blocked by the crowded Malaysian defense. Bui Hoang Viet Anh then tested Hazmi from the edge of the area, but the goalkeeper saved.

The result marked Malaysia's first victory over Vietnam since 2014, when they won 4-2 at My Dinh Stadium in the second leg of the ASEAN Cup semifinals.
