The renovation, set to be completed by Dec. 31 this year, will cost nearly VND1 trillion (US$38,27 million).
The T1 domestic terminal is a two-story, modern building inspired by the lotus flower and leaf, and a symbol of Nghe An, the hometown of President Ho Chi Minh.
The terminal measures 11,706 sq.m. The first floor is for arrivals and the second for departures.
The expansion will increase the floor area to 13,200 sq.m, boosting the terminal's capacity to 3–3.5 million passengers a year by 2030. It will cost VND68 billion.
The central atrium inside the terminal will be covered to expand the usable waiting area and add around 500 seats.
The second floor will also be expanded to have five scanners for security screening from the current three.
The exterior atrium will be closed off to create more usable space and a public area for passengers. The departure and arrival halls will get glass roofs.

The apron, measuring 38,348 sq.m, has seven aircraft parking spots now, and will be expanded to nine at a cost of VND236 billion.
Currently the airport serves 15–20 flights daily operated by Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways, and Pacific Airlines. During peak holiday periods that number can rise to 30–40 flights.
The closure will hit travel to Nghe An and the north central region in general, especially during the summer tourism season. Passengers can however fly into Tho Xuan Airport in Thanh Hoa or Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh.
