A car ran a red light and plowed into 17 motorbikes, injuring some 20 victims and leaving a trail of wreckage blocking the roads.

A black sedan controlled by Hoang Ho Vinh, 63, jumped a red light and plunged into motorbikes at the intersection of Vo Chi Cong and Xuan La roads in Hanoi at around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The car continued left onto Xuan La, where it then stopped. The vehicle still had two motorbikes underneath it that had been dragged from the crash site.

Around 20 victims were brought to Hanoi Heart Hospital No. 2. They were then transferred to units at other hospitals, including E Hospital and Vietnam National Children’s Hospital.

Motorbikes piled on top of each other after the accident. Footwear and other personal items belonging to the victims were scattered as far as 300 meters from the collision point.

At least 17 damaged motorbikes were left behind after they were hit.

Hanoi police arrived on the scene and took statements from the driver.

They said that test results showed that the driver had not consumed alcohol or drugs.

The motorist said that he had been driving from Hanoi Heart Hospital No. 2, where he’d take his wife for a checkup.
