Roads T1 and T2 leading to Long Thanh International Airport, Vietnam’s biggest, have taken shape after more than two years of construction, with the former expected to open on Sept. 2.

The two roads will connect the airport in Dong Nai Province with National Highway 51 and the HCMC–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway.

Both highways run between HCMC and Dong Nai.

Construction cost over VND2.63 trillion (US$103 million).

Both were scheduled to open by the end of this year, but the work was accelerated so that T1 can open by National Day.

In the photo taken on July 26 above, the T1-T2 junction is complete and links with the airport.

There will be three major interchanges: T1 with T2, T2 with the Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway, and T1 with National Highway 51.

T1, and its overpasses connecting to T2, has been basically completed. It will run 4.28 kilometers with six lanes and allow speeds of up to 80 kph.

A kilometer away, the T1–National Highway 51 junction has also been built, with the main stretch and connecting roads already asphalted.

Many other works on T1 are also nearly complete, including lighting, guardrails and greenery.

Once T1 opens, vehicles can travel from Long Thanh Airport to the Ben Luc–Long Thanh Expressway (connecting HCMC and the neighboring provinces of Dong Nai and Long An, which is now a part of Tay Ninh), Bien Hoa–Vung Tau Expressway (an under construction expressway linking Dong Nai and Ba Ria – Vung Tau provinces, both now merged into HCMC), and HCMC’s Ring Road 3.

Some three kilometers away, work is ongoing on T2’s main roadway and branches connecting to T1 and the Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway. T2 is designed as a four-lane highway with a top speed of 100 kph.

It is 80% complete, with most of its cement-treated base layers finished.

The road will start at the HCMC–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway and end at T1, serving as a vital link in the airport infrastructure network.

At the T2–expressway junction, overpass sections are being built, and contractors are preparing to install beams for the overpass crossing the expressway.

Long Thanh Airport itself is bustling with construction as key components such as the terminal, runway, air traffic control tower, aircraft apron, and fueling area are being built.

The first phase is targeted for completion by year-end. It will serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.

Spread over 5,000 ha, the airport has an estimated cost of VND336.63 trillion ($13.2 billion).

Phase 2, set for completion in 2035, will add a passenger terminal and runway each, doubling annual capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo.

By 2030–40 the airport hopes to handle 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo a year.

When completed, roads T1 and T2 will enhance connectivity between the airport and major routes to HCMC, Binh Duong, Ba Ria–Vung Tau, and other southern provinces.

T1 will also serve as the main route for transporting machinery and equipment for construction in the airport’s future phases.
