Since early this year, contractors have been assembling the roof system, installing multi-layered white aluminum sheets over the terminal's wings. In September 2023, they completed the installation of the steel framework for roofing on two of the wings.
Duong Quang Dien, deputy director of the Long Thanh Airport Project Management Board, the steel roof structures on the terminal's wings have been largely completed.
The first sections of the metal roof have been installed on the wings of Long Thanh Airport's terminal. According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the state-owned firm managing all commercial airports in the country, the majority of the roof system is constructed from multi-layered metal materials, with only a small portion featuring glass roofing.
All the steel roof frames were imported, and cranes with a capacity of 600-800 tons were used for their installation. Once in place, the roof frames were covered with protective mesh.
On the uppermost floor of the central terminal, numerous concrete columns are being constructed to support the steel roof framework. Alongside the roofing, ongoing work includes the installation of jet bridge foundations, stairways, escalators, and elevators.
Contractors have deployed hundreds of construction teams, with nearly 7,000 experts, engineers, and workers actively on site.
The roofing phase is expected to be completed by October, two months ahead of schedule.
The reinforced concrete work for columns, beams, and floors on levels 1, 2, and 3 of the terminal's lower floors has been fully completed. ACV aims to complete all construction work on the terminal by 2025, with the installation of operational equipment and trial runs beginning in early 2026. The project is on track to have all components finalized by August 2026.
The Long Thanh Airport project, located 55 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City, covers an area of 5,000 hectares with a total estimated investment of VND336.63 trillion. In its first phase, the airport will feature one runway, a passenger terminal, and auxiliary facilities, enabling it to handle 25 million passengers annually. Future phases will expand its capacity to accommodate 100 million passengers per year.
Once completed, the airport is expected to serve as a major international aviation hub for Vietnam and the region, surpassing HCMC's Tan Son Nhat Airport as the largest in the country.
