A project was started in February to upgrade a road of 7.4 km through the Prenn Pass, which links with the end of National Highway 20 in Lam Dong Province as a gateway into Da Lat City, a top tourist attraction of Vietnam.
The highway is currently the only route linking Da Lat with Ho Chi Minh City and its neighbors and therefore, is always congested, especially during the weekend, peak travel season, and holidays.
Now the expansion has been finished on a 3-km section of the road on the side of Da Lat City.
On Thursday, vehicles were allowed to use the newly expanded section after 10 months of traffic restrictions.
A turn on the expanded section.
Thanks to the project, it has become less curvy after the road widened, reducing danger for drivers.
Costing VND552 billion (US$22.6 million) of the state budget, the project enlarged the 7-meter and two-lane road to 14 m with four lanes.
Work is still underway to complete the remaining part, which is more than 4 km long.
Ngo Van Ninh, spokesman for Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, said the entire route will be opened to certain vehicles (excluding trucks with high loading capacity) on Dec. 28 so that people and tourists can travel conveniently during the New Year. Then it will be closed against for completion.
