The 5,000-hectare Long Thanh International Airport project in Dong Nai Province which borders HCMC has an estimated total investment of VND336.6 trillion ($14.3 billion). Its construction started in early 2021 and was divided into three phases. The first phase of the project is to build a runway, passenger terminal and auxiliary items with a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo a year.
The passenger terminal is the most important item of phase one. This is a work of Heerim Architects and Planners Co. Ltd (South Korea), taking the lotus as the main inspiration and incorporating it into the design of the roof, main front of the terminal and interior of the check-in lobby.

The cargo terminal in phase one has a capacity of 1.2 million tons of cargo per year.
Phase two will add another runway and a passenger terminal to reach a capacity of 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo a year, with a roadmap from 2025-2030. Phase three is completing other items to reach a capacity of 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo a year with a roadmap from 2035-2040.

The project has not yet selected a contractor to construct the passenger terminal. Earlier in May, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested that related parties must review and clarify their responsibility for the delay immediately.

Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Danh Huy said that the bidding for building the passenger terminal is facing difficulties because enterprises are anxious over meeting progress requirements.
