Despite setting the best record in the qualifying, Bunthorn was not tipped to take home the gold medal as Vietnam’s Luong Duc Phuong was the heavy favorite.
However, to everyone's surprise, Bunthorn led the pack after 600 meters and did not give any of his competitors a chance to catch up.
Bunthorn finished the event in 1:52:910 minutes, followed by Luong Duc Phuoc at 01:53:340 minutes and Malaysia’s Wan Muhammad Fazri Wan Zahari at 01:53:860 minutes.
“I am very emotional. My parents passed away, and I miss them greatly,” said Bunthorn. “If they were still here, they would have been very happy with my victory.”
The home crowd was elated with his win, and everyone was eager to congratulate him and get a photo with their hero.
"I am very grateful of the coach and the home crowd. They have always been cheering for me. The hearts of all Cambodian people have united to give me the strength to win," said Bunthorn.
