Popular travel destinations in Sa Pa, Ha Giang and Hue were flooded by seas of holiday-goers during the seven-day Tet break, triggering heavy traffic congestion and long lines at attractions.

Heavy congestion surrounded Tham Ma slope, causing tourists to wait for more than an hour to cross the Ma Pi Leng Pass. On weekdays it takes about 20 minutes.

A representative from the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark said that hotels and homestays in the area were nearly full.

On Tuesday alone, about 300,000 tourists visited attractions in the geopark.

A road leading to Cat Cat Village in the mountainous resort city Sa Pa was overcrowded with lines of vehicles on Monday, the third day of the lunar new year.

Several tourist attractions in Sa Pa were overrun during the Tet break.

Bui Quyet, manager of the Sa Pa tourism consulting group on Facebook, said the overcrowding situation lessened on the fourth day, but downtown roads near the Stone Church were still congested.

Tourists had to wait for several hours to take a cable car ride to Mount Fansipan, “the Roof of Indochina.”

Foreign tourists visited Mua Cave in Ninh Binh, around 60 kilometers from Hanoi.

According to data from the provincial Department of Tourism, during the five-day holiday (from Feb 8-12), the province welcomed nearly 235,000 visitors, including 26,330 international visitors.

Dieu Thao from Hanoi said the Trang An ferry wharf was filled with lines of visitors waiting to board the boat on Tuesday.

Thao arrived at 9 a.m. and had to wait more than an hour to embark and admire the scenery.

Visitors flocked to Kien Trung Palace inside the Imperial Citadel of Hue to take photos on Monday.

Quy Hai Ly from HCMC said it only takes 5-10 minutes to reach the Citadel on weekdays, but during Tet it took him nearly one hour.

After four years of restoration, the palace reopened to visitors Feb 10.

Built in 1921-23, it was the home and workplace of both Emperor Khai Dinh and Emperor Bao Dai, the last emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty.

A street in the historic port city of Hoi An’s Old Town was flooded with tourists Tuesday morning.

Some hotels in Hoi An had reported no available rooms before the Lunar New Year holiday.

Bel Marina Hoi An Resort reached a capacity of 95%, while occupancy rates at Emerald Hoi An Riverside Resort reached 97%.

Cars stuck in traffic on a road leading to downtown Da Lat on Tuesday.

Most hotels in the city center were fully booked.

Le Anh Kiet, head of the municipal Culture and Information Department in Da Lat, said 153,000 tourists visited Da Lat February 8 to 12, an increase of 22.4% over the same period last year.

Public beaches in Doi Duong, Thuong Chanh, Da Ong Dia, Hon Rom (Phan Thiet) and Co Thach (Tuy Phong) were overcrowded.

Crowds flood the 3-km-long Bai Sau (Back Beach), the most popular beach in Vung Tau City on Tuesday.

Central routes such as Thuy Van and Ha Long streets were heavily congested.

The holiday break wraps up on Wednesday.
