The Da Huoai River in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, around four hours west of Da Lat, is a beloved natural destination with its blue waters winding around mountains and forests.
Originating from small mountain streams, the river features flat alluvial plains on both sides. In recent years, many visitors have flocked to the riverbanks of Da Huoai for camping and picnicking.
A group of tourists visited Da Huoai River for camping at the end of June. To Den, a 32-year-old member of the group, learned about this spot through a local's recommendation.
Visitors need to walk about 200 meters from the main road to the campsite, including crossing streams.
The camping site by the Da Huoai River is about 15 kilometers from Madagui Town. Visitors can travel by car or motorbike, with motorbikes being preferred for navigating narrow and difficult paths. Travelers are advised to check their tires, vehicle parts, oil levels, and fill up the gas tank before setting off, as the roads to this area are often deserted with sparse houses along the way.
The campsite is a flat alluvial sandbank by the river, shaded by trees. After navigating winding roads and small streams, the group set up camp on the sandbank to rest and start exploring Da Huoai River. According to To, the sandbank is the best spot to enjoy the river's scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
The Da Huoai riverbed has large rocks, dividing the water into small streams and pools nestled among the rocks, ideal for wading, kayaking, and photo opportunities.
Kayaking is a popular activity due to the calm, cool, and shallow waters. "The hotter it gets, the cooler the water feels," To said.
There are no on-site tourism services, so campers must bring their own equipment, including boats, tents, food, and safety gear.
Participating in this camping trip, Tan said the journey was worth it for the chance to relax in nature. "It feels wonderful," said the 28-year-old tourist.
There are no nearby hotels, guesthouses, or shops. To stay overnight, visitors should bring their own drinks, snacks, and food.
In the forest, night falls quickly, dominated by the sounds of water and insects. Nighttime activities are limited, with most campers lighting fires to cook before retiring to their tents.
"Sleeping in the forest can sometimes wake you up because you're not used to sleeping on the ground, but it's worth a try," To noted. Campers can witness the forest's transformation from dawn to dusk and back into the night.
For safety, campers should go with a guide or hire a local guide, as there are no permits required and no management in the area. Visitors should clean up and dispose of their trash properly.
Da Huoai River lies downstream of the Dam'Bri hydroelectric plant. Campers should avoid the rainy season and check the plant's water release schedule on its website before visiting.
Besides the Da Huoai River, visitors to Da Huoai District can enjoy other activities in the Madagui area. To suggests visiting nearby durian gardens to purchase durians as gifts. Da Huoai is known as the durian capital of Lam Dong Province.
